PRODUCT-REVIEW:
Magna-Guard Metal Particle Trap
by Magna-Guard Inc.
review by Daryl Riegel
We've all seen magnetic drain plugs for engine and transmission
oil pans, which trap metal particles from the fluid. In fact, the
factory transmission comes with a ring magnet in the oil pan. A
company recently sent us a product for review, which is a slight
spin-off of these already proven practices.
Magna-Guard, Inc. markets a rectangular magnet, which fits inside
of any oil filter. As the oil passes through the filter, metal particles
are trapped by the magnet. Magna-Guard claims many things when using
this product, the most important to us was reliability and reduced
maintenance costs. They claim that with continuous use, "Magna-Guard
arrests and removes up to 99.1% of iron wear elements from the oil
system". They also claim, that "this prolongs peak engine
performance by reducing engine wear approximately 13-times."
While we cannot substantiate these exact claims, we can relay what
we've found by using the product. On a "freshly-rebuilt"
engine with less than 10.000 miles, we installed the magnet in a
stock-size oil filter and ran the engine for approx. 3.000 miles.
The photos below show the somewhat surprising results.
Along with the purchase, Magna-Guard will also send SAL (Society
of Automotive Engineers) test reports and independent laboratory
results, which "scientifically denote the performance and benefits
of Magna-Guard". Some of these results are from tests of similar
products and show particle reduction and insignificant pressure
drop.
Is Magna-Guard stronger than a "regular" magnet? We're
not sure, but for only $2.99 each or discounted at 4 for $8.97 (shipping
is included), it's easier than trying to locate another less-expensive
magnet of the same dimensions.
Magna-Guard offered special discounts to TBN subscribers, but required
all shipments to go to one location. Unfortunately, discounts on
a $2.99 unit cannot cover reshipment to subscribers, but be sure
to note on your order that you read this review in the Turbo Buick
